How Cyberattacks are a Threat to Patient Safety
Cyberattacks can be expensive and problematic for hospitals and healthcare facilities. They can also negatively impact patient care. The American Hospital Association shared that 74% of surveyed hospitals reported a direct patient care impact from a recent significant cyberattack. This article from Chief Healthcare Executive discusses how these attacks threaten patient safety. For example, patient care can be delayed because of access to prior authorizations from insurers. If electronic health records are effected, patient care is impacted by the move to paper charting. In some instances, patients are transferred or ambulances diverted because of cyberattacks. Social Engineering Tactics Targeting Healthcare
In a joint cybersecurity advisory, the FBI and HHS warned against a social engineering campaign targeting healthcare, public health entities and providers. Threat actors are using phishing schemes to steal login credentials in order to divert automated clearinghouse (ACH) payments to U.S. controlled bank accounts. Of note, two of the spearphishing phone numbers listed in the alert are Louisiana 504 numbers and one is a northern Mississippi area code, 662.
Healthcare organizations are attractive targets for threat actors due to their size, technological dependence, access to personal health information, and unique impacts from patient care disruptions. The FBI and HHS also provided recommended mitigations to reduce the likelihood and impact of social engineering incidents.
