Louisiana Vital Records Law Change

Physicians licensed in Louisiana are authorized to certify the cause of death information for deaths occurring in Louisiana. Effective January 1, 2019, Louisiana law provides that those required to sign a death certificate must complete it electronically.

Act 672 of the 2018 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature requires the use of the Louisiana Electronic Event Registration System (LEERS) to e-sign death certificates. The new law does not require advance registration with LEERS; however, you may register for a LEERS User ID using the attached registration form. If you already e-sign Louisiana death certificates via LEERS you are not required to take any action.

For more information on LEERS, please click here.

The Louisiana Bureau of Vital Records and Statistics’ LEERS Helpdesk is staffed Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to help with new user accounts, password maintenance, and the Cause of Death certification process. It can be reached at 504.593.5101 or at leers@la.gov.

For further consultation on compliance with this new law, contact the LAMMICO Risk Management and Patient Safety Department at 504.841.5211.
