Top 10 Health Technology Hazards for 2020

The patient safety organization ECRI Institute released its 2020 list of the top 10 technology hazards in healthcare facilities. Experts selected this year’s 10 hazards after analyzing such factors as the severity, frequency and breadth of various technology-related problems seen in healthcare systems. All the identified threats can at least be minimized, if not prevented, by the application of relevant and practical management strategies.

Three examples of the hazards on the list include:

  1. Surgical stapler misuse—Consequences of a staple line failing or staples being misapplied can result in patient harms including hemorrhaging, tissue damage and failed anastomoses.
  2. Unproven surgical robotic procedures—Use of surgical robotic systems for new, unverified procedures can lead to complications, injuries and poor outcomes.
  3. Missing implant data for patients scheduled for MRI scans—An absence of information about a patient’s implanted device can result in harm to the patient or to the device when a patient with an unidentified implant undergoes an MRI scan.

Administration and staff at healthcare facilities should become aware of all 10 dangers, and generate ideas and take actions to benefit patients by improving their institution’s performance in these areas. To download the entire 2020 list, visit
