Avoid a Five Percent Medicare Penalty While You Are at Home Over the Holidays!

Avoid a Five Percent Medicare Penalty While You Are at Home Over the Holidays!

It is not too late! You can do it over the holidays.

If you are a MIPS eligible clinician, you can complete one (or two) CDC courses online to earn the 15 points you need to avoid a Medicare penalty. The Improvement Activities performance category in MIPS is worth the 15 points that you need in 2018.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Individuals and small groups (15 and under eligible clinicians) only need one high weighted improvement activity to earn the required 15 points.
  • Large groups will need two high weighted activities to avoid the penalty.
  • If one eligible clinician in a group completes a training, the entire group can get credit for the Improvement Activity if they opt to report as a group (or virtual group) for MIPS.
  • Individuals must:
    • complete the entire training course (all available modules) and pass the test in each module in order to get credit for the Improvement Activity
    • keep the certificate of training as documentation (six years)
  • The courses can only be taken once every four years for MIPS credit.
  • CME credit is available through the CDC.
  • LAMMICO Risk Management credit is not available for taking the CDC course.

The course options are listed below with the corresponding Improvement Activity ID number.

Special Note for Prescribers in Louisiana:

The CDC opioid course does not meet the requirements for Act 76 of the Louisiana Legislature and the LSBME's rules. Louisiana providers must still take a course approved by the LSBME before the renewal date for their 2019 license. LAMMICO policyholders may access the LSMBE approved course "Louisiana Act 76, Controlled Substances: Prescribing, Diversion Prevention and Addiction Treatment" free of charge by logging in as a member at
