Congratulations to the recipient of the 5th Annual LAMMICO Patient Safety Award and Grant: Lafayette Surgical Specialty Hospital in Lafayette, Louisiana. The 2019-2020 Patient Safety Award and Grant focused on reducing hospital acquired infections due to instrument contamination. Proper care and handling of reusable instruments, from the point of use through terminal processing, is necessary to reduce the risk of procedure-related infections and enhance patient safety.
By demonstrating the best methods employed to reduce hospital acquired infections, after completing LAMMICO's risk management and patient safety education, Lafayette Surgical Specialty Hospital was awarded a:
$10,000 grant to be used for nursing professional development
One-year Risk Manager membership to the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM)
One-year complimentary membership to Medical Interactive Community for all employees to access our risk management CME/CNE/MOC courses online
Lafayette Surgical had 93% of their full-time nursing staff complete the learning activity “Reducing Hospital Acquired Infections: Instrument Point of Use Care.” Their review of policies and procedures regarding instrument point of use care resulted in process adjustments. They held a Rapid Process Improvement Workshop where they developed an action plan and Standard Operating Procedure for instrument point of use care.
Second Place Participant: West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital
West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital in Sulphur, Louisiana, was named the second place participant of the Patient Safety Award and Grant. They identified opportunities and implemented changes to improve instrument transportation and processing. After implementation, they had no reportable surgical site infections in the fourth quarter of 2019. A grant of $5,000 to be used for nursing professional development was presented to this hospital in recognition of their second place honor.
LAMMICO commends these two hospitals, and all others who submitted award applications, for their commitment to improving patient safety.
